Safe Forestry is a digital, forestry data management system designed as a tool to help log on-site activities and improve skill and competence recording in the industry.
Safe Forestry has been created by a forestry contractor, Calum Duffy. Calum is still an active contractor, who works daily with chainsaws and harvesting equipment, so he knows the complexities and issues of the job only too well, Calum was challenged by the HSE during a site visit in February 2019 to improve the way he proves the competence of his operators.
He was like most other contractors at this point, relying on certification and word of mouth on an operators skill level. The HSE visit soon pointed out that wasn’t enough if it was to “all go wrong”… So this is where the concept of Safe Forestry was born. After 2 years of field testing by Calum, his operators and several other contractors the system now incorporates the fundamentals required to work towards compliance.
